Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus (The bat) is controversially one of the best operettas in history. Die Fledermaus had not only presented the main theme in a comical and satirical manner, thus making the show very enjoyable, but also had emotionally healed the viewers living in the era of relative poverty and uncertainties.

September 14, 2014

Source:

UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and the Dutch Ambassador to South Korea take a fact-finding trip to Gangjin,
September 12, 2014

On Sept. 12, 2014, Amb. Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UN MDGs Advocate, took a fact-finding trip to the South Korean city of Gangjin, South Jeolla Province, together with H.E. Mr. Paul Menkveld, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Korea, as well as tourism professionals, local officials and media representatives.
The trip focused on the history of Hendrick Hamel (1630 – 1692), a Dutchman who lived in Korea for over 13 years after he survived a shipwreck on Jeju Island in 1653, together with 35 crew members. After being taken to Seoul for detention, they were transferred to Gangjin (Byeongyeong) in 1656 and stayed there for seven years before being dispersed to other cities. Hamel finally escaped Korea from Yeosu in 1666 with seven of his mates. After he returned home, he wrote an account of his experiences, ‘the Journal of Hendrick Hamel’, the first book on Korea published in Europe.
The fact-finding trip introduced several sites connected to Hamel’s life in Gangjin, including the Jeolla Byeongyeong Military Fortress, formerly used to defend the southwest part of the country for over 500 years, and now a construction site for the Dutch Village Project; the Hamel Memorial Museum and its surroundings, including a 500 year old Gingko tree, and finally Suin-sa, a Buddhist temple which hosts the remains of three temples located in Suin mountain, which must have been frequently visited by Hamel and his Dutch friends.
As part of its activities to develop sustainable tourism projects in rural areas, the ST-EP Foundation intends to design the ‘Hamel Trail Project’, as an innovative tourist attraction aimed to promote South Jeolla Province and Gangjin county.

특히, HIV/AIDS와 관련한 정보를 제공하고자 유엔에이즈(UNAIDS)와 협력 하에 도서관 내에 처음으로 ‘The Bravest Boy I Know’ 동화책을 유엔에이즈코너에 비치하였다. 또한 스텝재단이 기획 및 제작한 새마을운동정신과 관련한 동화책 “주목할 만한 놀라운 이야기” (‘The Extraordinary Story of the Tree-Leaf Palm’)의 영문판과 불어판도 비치됐다.

UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UNAIDS Launch a Book on HIV for Children ‘The Bravest Boy I Know’ - Rome
May 08, 2014

On 8th of May 2014, UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UNAIDS have launched a book on HIV for children sponsored by Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Republic of Korea and UNAIDS. ‘The Bravest Boy I Know’ was officially launched by H.E. Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, Dr. Taleb Rifai, UNWTO Secretary-General, Ambassador Dho Young-shim, Chairperson of the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation & UN MDGs Advocate and Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS on the occasion of the United Nations System Chief Executive Board for Coordination(CEB) in Rome. According to the report by UNAIDS and WHO in 2012, children living with HIV under 15 years old were about 3.3 million, and only 650,000 of them were able to access antiretroviral treatment. Therefore, increasing access to simple and effective treatment for children is one of the major challenges in the AIDS response, and the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation believes that ‘The Bravest Boy I Know’ as an important education tool to deal with the challenge would widen access to the lifesaving treatment.

This book conveys the important message that by taking medicine, children living with HIV can live active and healthy lives while also explaining that the medicines can make children feel unwell and tired. The books will be distributed to schools across Africa through UNAIDS Corners in UNWTO ST-EP Foundation's 143 UN MDGs Thank You Small Libraries. Since November 2011, the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation and UNAIDS have partnered to equip all UN MDGs TYSLs with a UNAIDS corner so that children can have an easy access to learn about HIV.

Amb. Dho also explained the background of the partnership between the ST-EP Foundation and UN AIDS, aimed to inform and educate children about HIV/AIDS, how to prevent, how to treat it and how to live with it. She added that children should be aware that they are not responsible for the diseases transmitted by their parents, including poverty, and they could change their conditions through education. She concluded that through education, children could gain hope and self-confidence.

Over a decade of putting sustainable tourism initiatives into action - See more at: http://dailydeve
April 24, 2014

DD: What was the moment of inspiration that led to the creation of the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation?

The thrilling journey of the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation started in 2002, when the UNWTO launched its ST-EP (Sustainable Tourism for Poverty Elimination) Initiative at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa.

As a response to the adoption of the UN Millennium Development goals in 2000, the ST-EP initiative was aimed to enhance UNWTO’s work to encourage sustainable tourism – social, economic and ecological – with activities that specifically alleviate poverty, deliver development and create jobs for people living on less than a dollar a day.

At that time, I was representing the Republic of Korea as Chairperson of the Visit Korea Year, and I immediately encouraged our government to join this sustainable tourism venture. In particular, the Korean government expressed its willingness to play an active role in the creation of the UNWTO ST-EP Foundation, in order to bolster efforts to increase political will and funding opportunities to support the ST-EP projects.

As a result, an agreement was signed in 2004 between the Korean Government and the UNWTO to establish and host the ST-EP Foundation in Seoul.

The constitution of the ST-EP Foundation was unanimously approved by the 16th UNWTO General Assembly in December 2005, in Dakar, Senegal.

Three months later, the ST-EP Foundation’s Board of Directors convened its first meeting in Berlin, Germany, and voted the funding of the 6 first ST-EP projects supported by the Foundation.

DD: Were sustainability, capacity-building and knowledge-transfer programs established in the organization from the beginning?

Yes, those programs have been established and implemented from the beginning, based on the main mandate of the ST-EP Foundation, which is to promote poverty elimination through sustainable tourism development programmes and projects that can be carried out while preserving culture and the natural environment, thus contributing to the UN Millennium Development Goals (UN MDGs), and then UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

The ST-EP Foundation have implemented various capacity building and knowledge transfer programs that have benefitted over hundred tourism professionals and government officials from African, ASEAN and Latin/Central American countries. Meanwhile, the ST-EP Foundation has promoted the transfer of the Saemaul Movement experience, the Korean sustainable development model, while contributing to its globalization in Africa.

DD: Ultimately, how are your organization and its commitment to reduction of extreme poverty and inequalities good for the environment?

We should remind here that ‘ST-EP’ stands for ‘Sustainable Tourism for Eliminating Poverty’, which means that the economic, social and environmental dimensions are equally important.

Most ST-EP projects therefore integrate an environmental component, and are often designed as a means to create economic incentives to protect the environment and to consider natural resources as a tourism asset. For example, the ST-EP Foundation has supported the construction of an eco-lodge in Madagascar to promote the preservation of a forest area as a tourism destination. The Foundation has also supported the development of ecotourism in a network of protected areas and national parks in 10 countries of West Africa.

Finally, it is worthwhile to remind here the 7 ST-EP mechanisms through which tourism can contribute to the social, cultural and environmental pillars of sustainable development. Cross-cutting aspects such as gender equality, social empowerment, the protection of biodiversity and conservation of heritage are as well addressed in ST-EP activities.

Employment of the poor in tourism enterprises
Supply of goods and services to tourism enterprises by the poor or by enterprises employing the poor
Direct sales of goods and services to visitors by the poor (informal economy)
Establishment and running of small, micro or community-based tourism enterprises or joint ventures by the poor (formal economy)
Redistribution of proceeds from tax or charge on tourists or tourism enterprises
Voluntary giving and support by tourists or tourism enterprises
Investment in infrastructure stimulated by tourism also benefiting the poor in the locality, directly or through support to other sectors
